Children in Therapy

While childhood and adolescence are times of tremendous growth and development, this time can also be filled with significant growing pains and challenges.  Counseling at Lakes Psychology Center is geared towards equipping children, teens and their families with tools to help them become happy and healthy adults. This includes learning new behaviors to help them cope with current stressors, learning tools to identify, express, and regulate their emotions, develop social-emotional skills, and form secure attachments.

The counseling process also helps overcome past traumas and process current life stressors such as families going through a divorce and/or the loss of a close relationship. In addition, our therapists are highly trained in helping children and families learn the necessary skills to manage and triumph over Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD) and other disruptive behavior disorders, and problems typically found in childhood and adolescents.

The following is a list of reasons parents often seek counseling for their child:

  • Your child has ADHD and is in need of skills to help improve attention and decrease problematic behaviors.

  • Your child is sad, fearful, and/or angry much of the time.

  • Your child refuses to go to school or other social outings.

  • Your child has social skill deficits that are impacting friendship formation.

  • Your child has a negative view of him/her-self.

  • Your child does not get along with one or both parents.

  • Your child is engaging in risky behaviors (drug and alcohol use, sex, staying out past curfew).

  • Your child is struggling with family changes (divorce, birth of sibling, blended families, adoption).
